Sandry’s Book (Circle of Magic) by Tamora Pierce Friday, Dec 11 2009

Author: Tamora Pierce
Year: 1997
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
Protagonist: Sandrilene fa Toren, Briar Moss, Trisana Chandler, Daja Kisubo

I decided randomly a couple days ago that I was going to read all eight of my Emelan books (Circle of Magic quartet & Circle Opens quartet), which is most of the series, minus the Will of the Empress and Melting Stones. I thought I’d go through all the books I have right now to post here before I go getting any new ones, since, considering how many I have, I haven’t done a whole lot here yet. So in between working on my novel and doing random shit, I’m making my way through these. Already done Sandry’s Book so here you go.

The Circle of Magic stars four young mages-in-training as its protagonists: Sandrilene fa Toren (Sandry), Briar Moss, Trisana Chandler (Tris) and Daja Kisubo. But each book gives a little more focus to one of the characters. In this case, Sandry. It begins by splitting in their four very different situations.

A plague has come through Hatar where Sandry and her family are. Her parents are now dead due to it and her nursemaid, a Trader, is also after being killed by the mob since Traders aren’t universally well-liked. Sandry had been knocked into a small room, hidden by magic, for her own protection. Soon, the only light she has goes out and she is left in the dark with nothing but her weaving things. Trying to focus on something out, Sandry begins weaving. Soon, she is able to weave light into the thread she makes to help ‘keep her sane’. After being trapped for an unknown time, Niklaren Goldeye, a mage, and some others discover her. Niklaren, better referred to as Niko, takes her to her Uncle, the ruler of Emelan, before escorting her to Winding Circle Temple.

Daja’s a Trader and her family’s ship had set sail earlier than they should have. Her family’s ship is destroyed in a storm and she is its sole survivor. She floats on a piece of the ship with a suraku – survival box – for days before being discovered by a ship. Niko is on this ship and he and the crew save her. Back with the Traders, they brand her trangshi – bad luck or outcast – and give her a staff that symbolizes her as so since Traders believe sole survivors are bad luck. This also means she is not to interact with other Traders anymore. Niko is angered by this and thus takes Daja with him.

Roach is a streetrat in Hajra. He had been caught for the third time so he’s now to be sent to the mines or docks. During the trial, they sentence him to the docks but Niko interrupts the trial. He convinces the judge to allow him to take Roach with him to Winding Circle. Needing a new name, Roach calls himself Briar Moss, due to his interest and experiences with the plants of those names.

Tris is from a merchant family who doesn’t want her due to the strange things that happen around her. She had been passed from relative to relative until they had enough and she now resides in a dormitory at Stone Circle Temple. After overhearing girls talking mean things about her, she causes more havoc. The dedicate superior of the temple pleads with Niko to take Tris with him to Winding Circle and he does.

When the four children prove to have a hard time fitting in, they are sent Discipline under the supervision of Lark and Rosethorn.

That’s basically the beginning of Sandry’s Book. Once again, I’m gonna be a sweetheart and not spoil it for you because things aren’t as fun while you had spoilers. Unless you really wanted the spoilers but I’m not going to do that~ (Just call me lazy). Anyways, this book is very good and a good start to the Circle of Magic series. It may seem a little slow at first because we have to get them all to Discipline though where they see each other. But that doesn’t matter.

The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis Wednesday, Dec 9 2009

Author: CS Lewis
Year: 1950-1956
Genre: Fantasy, Action, Adventure
Protagonist: Peter, Susan, Edmund, Lucy, Caspian, Digory, Polly, Eustace, Jill, and a lot more 8D

So, I finally finished ready all these. Go Moot. 8D Anyways, this post is for all of the Chronicles of Narnia, not just one. And in case you were wondering, there’s seven of them. This post is in chronological order to the Narnian timeline, not when they were published okay?

Well, in case you haven’t seen the two movies that came out in the past few years, the Chronicles of Narnia are the stories of ordinary children from our world (though way back in around the forties) who are swept into the magical world of Narnia when they least expect it. Each story has a very different storyline to it, yet they are all connected because they all take place in Narnia or at least the world of Narnia, including the surrounding countries. Many of the characters appear in the different books as well. The one character who appears in each and every Narnia book is Aslan, the Lion. He’s pretty badass.

CotM: Alistair (Dragon Age: Origins) Tuesday, Dec 8 2009

Name: Alistair
Age: Unstated. Most likely around 20-25
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Family: King Maric (father), King Cailan (half-brother), Goldanna (sister), unnamed mother
Voice Actor: Steve Valentine

My Dragon Age Origins addiction should have seen this coming…

Anyways, Alistair is one of the main characters of Dragon Age: Origins. You meet him early in the game after arriving at Ostagar. He’s your fellow Grey Warden and thus is your constant traveling companion (well, sort of). He also serves as a great source of comic relief as well as a romantic love interest if you’re playing as a female character (giggle, giggle, snort, I fucking love you <3). I know a lot of people don’t like Alistair as a character due to him being very sarcastic and what not, but I personally love him. His conversations are practically all hilarious and he is a good character to use as a tank. Plus, I’m just a giggly fangirl and had to romance him right off the bat like a lovestruck teenager but it’s all good because I got to be queen. Did I mention he’s heir to the throne of Ferelden? Fuck yeah.

Of course, like with all characters, there is a situation that may make him leave your party. Just do it if you want the recruit all characters trophy. *_*

Alistair’s dialogue anyone?

This is War by 30 Seconds to Mars Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

Soooooo, I’m almost done the Silver Chair for the Chronicles of Narnia, which would leave me on the Last Battle (the last book). And I miraculously finished my first playthrough on Dragon Age: Origins. So, when I’m not feeling incredibly lazy, I may post a decent review of it. (Considering what a badass game it is~) Anyways, that’s not why I’m here.

This is War by 30 Seconds to Mars is a song I’m currently addicted to. Mind you, I’m not a 30STM fan in the least. In fact, I can’t name any of their other songs. All I know is Jared Leto is the main singer. Really, that’s all I know about this band. BUT, it is in the credits for Dragon Age: Origins. (See where that went? 8D) Though the style of music may not fit the game as much as the song before it (instruments, the ‘medieval’ feeling), I think this song ultimately fits the game a lot. The beat, the melody, and the words really do represent the game truly and that’s what makes me love this song.

A Warning to people, Good and Evil
This Is War
To the Soldier, The Civillian, The Martyr, The Victim
This is War

Its the moment of truth and the moment to lie
Its the moment to live and the moment to die
The moment to fight, the moment to fight, to fight, to fight, to fight

To the right To the left
we will fight to the death
To the Edge of the Earth,
It’s a Brave New World from the last to the first
To the right, To the left,
We will fight to the death
To the Edge of the Earth
Its a Brave New World, Its a Brave New World

(woah,ohs)x2

A warning to the prophet, the liar, the honest
This is War
To the leader, the pariah, the victim, the messiah
This is war

Its the moment of truth and the moment to lie

The moment to fight, the moment to fight, to fight, to fight, to fight

To the right, To the left,
we will fight to the death

Its a Brave New World, Its A Brave New World, Its A Brave New World

I do believe in the light, raise your hands up to the sky
The fight is done, the war is won, lift your hands towards the sun
towards the sun, (Its the moment of truth and the moment to lie Its the moment to live and the moment to die, the moment to fight)
towards the sun,

the war is won ( to fight, to fight, to fight,to fight )

To the right, To the left,
We will fight to the death
To the Edge of the Earth,
It’s a Brave New World from the last to the first

A Brave new world…

I believe in nothing, not the end and not the start
I believe in nothing, not the earth and not the stars
I believe in nothing, not the day and not the dark
I believe in nothing, but the beating of our hearts (woah ohs)
I believe in nothing, 100 suns until we part
I believe in nothing, not in satan not in god
I believe in nothing, not in peace and not in war
I believe in nothing, but the truth of who we are

Fire Emblem: Hasha No Tsurugi Thursday, Nov 26 2009

Creator: Izawa Hiroshi (author), Yamada Koutarou (artist)
Chapters: 45
Volumes: 11
Genre: Shounen, Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Protagonist: Al

Just finished reading this earlier today after reading it off and on for the past month (or something like that 8D). Hasha no Tsurugi takes place during Fire Emblem 6: Sword of Seals. Most of the storyline is based around the game though we see it from the point of view of Al, an original character for the manga. A few other characters who were not from the game were also added, the main ones being Tiena, Gant and Kilmar. The storyline essentially goes like the game: the Kingdom of Bern has attacked Lycia, sparked conflict in the Western Isles and is warring against Etruria. But, of course, we see it from Al’s point of view. It begins with Al leaving home to adventure and find his place in life. He comes across Gant, a knight from Tania Castle, and with Gant saves Princess Tiena. Together, the trio travel in hopes of uniting with Lord Roy’s army (Roy being our game’s protagonist, in case you didn’t know) and stopping King Zephiel’s plans (Zephiel being the king of Bern). Before joining with Roy’s army, Al also meets various members of the game’s cast, including Chad, Lance and Echidna.

What made my day is that this isn’t just a simple retelling of the game. No, Al doesn’t even meet up with Roy until about midway through and the entire game is based around Roy. So we see a lot more that happens away from their army. Which, is very awesome if you have played the game so you don’t know what happens. And I also love how they go through some of the characters’ endings in the style that the game does them in. Which I also love because I love the ending style of the Fire Emblem series and what not. I would have enjoyed it much more if there was more of my favorite characters, but that’s probably me being biased. A lot of the game cast, though, had little to say, aside from Roy, Cecelia, Fa, Percival, Zephiel, Narshen and Elphin. Much of the game cast, in fact, are seen in just one panel with little to say. Others appear in many panels but have of a few lines throughout the duration of the series (Dieck and Marcus for example). I would have loved a lot more Dieck but that is, again, me being biased because I adore him. I was pleased though with the amount Thany got, considering she isn’t a main character. And I have grown to love Gant. He’s pretty awesome.

Anyways, whether you’re a fan of Fire Emblem or not, this is a good read. Parts may be confusing if you haven’t played the game though. But I have so I can’t really say. Enjoys.

Characters of Importance

Al: protagonist. Recently left home to travel. Joins up with Tiena, Gant and Kilmar.
Tiena: princess of Tania in Lycia. Travels with Al.
Gant: Knight of Castle Tania and guard for princess Tiena.
Kilmar: met with Al while imprisoned at a mine. Now travels with him. Master swordsman.
Roy: Son of the marquess of Pharae, Eliwood. Leader of Lycian Army.
Zephiel: King of Bern. Started the war.
Guinivere: Princess of Bern and Zephiel’s younger half-sister.
Echidna: leader of the rebels in the Western Isles.
Elphin: staff officer of Roy’s army.
Zeed: Member of the Dragon Knights of Bern.
Narshen: one of the three Dragon Generals of Bern.

I’m gonna read Death Note now. Byes.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon Tuesday, Nov 24 2009

Yeah.Hi.NewMoon.

Starring: Kirsten Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner
Director: Chris Weitz
Written By: Melissa Rosenberg, Stephanie Meyer (novel)
Year: 2009
Genre: Romantic-Fantasy
Run Time: 130 min.

Watched New Moon yesterday with Sarah and her mom. As I mentioned before, I read all the books. I’m not the biggest fan; I think they’re alright. They are re-read worthy. But they aren’t masterpieces by any account. You can find stories of the same quality browsing through websites like fictionpress.com and fanfiction.net. And sometimes their length gives me a headache when it’s filled with Bella’s pining. Yes, she’s a lovestruck teenage girl but you don’t have to detail it that much.

Anyways. I’m talking about the movie. The theater was totally packed so I’m happy we got there really early. We didn’t go on opening night for that reason alone because we knew we couldn’t get in. And I have to say, this movie is 100x better than the previous one. Seriously. The new director did a much better job. And I’m not just saying that because we had half-naked boys running around left, right and center (though that really helped).

The Twilight Saga: Twilight Tuesday, Nov 24 2009

Yeah. Just catching up on stuff so my movies aren’t out of order. Completely unrelated –> I got Animal Parade. My life is complete. <3

Starring: Kirsten Stewart, Robert Pattinson
Director: Catherine Hardwicke
Written By: Melissa Rosenberg, Stephanie Meyer (novel)
Year: 2008
Genre: Romantic-Fantasy
Run Time: 121 min.

Uh, yeah. I watched New Moon last night so I thought I’d stick up Twilight too just so I don’t have movies out of order and what not. 8D Fweee.

I have watched Twilight about four times now (once in theaters, three times on DVD). I hadn’t read the books by the time I watched it in theaters so I really had nothing to compare it too. Now, that I have read the whole series, I must say: they aren’t masterpieces but this movie didn’t really do it much justice anyways. That kind of says a lot about this movie, eh? I blame it mostly on the director. Heard she sucks. This is one of those movies that, unless you’re a big fan of the series, you probably only want to watch it with your friends to make fun of. I don’t mind it; I don’t have high movie standards to begin with. I’ve been a fan of vampires ever since I knew what a vampire was (which was waaaaaaay before Twilight was even a daydream in Meyer’s head, probably) and so I like watching everything about vampires. The vampire lore in this movie (of course, from the book) isn’t that bad. Except the sparkling. I just can’t get over that. I wish they wouldn’t sparkle.

If you haven’t heard already (you must be living under a rock), Twilight is the tale of Isabella “Bella” Swan and her whirlwind romance with vampire, Edward Cullen. The story is pretty much well known already, so I don’t feel the need to really describe it. It’s almost the same as the book. But if you haven’t read the book yet, you can read all about it on the Twilight Wiki page.

And I’ve discovered the more thing. =D

Dear Myself: World’s End Sunday, Nov 22 2009

Creator: Eiki Eiki
Chapters: 2
Volumes: 1
Genre: Drama, Romance, Psychological, Shounen-Ai
Protagonist: Hirofumi Mizui

Since I reread Dear Myself yesterday, I thought I’d reread World’s End today. 8D Cause I’m cool like that. Again, this is short. It’s just a one-shot.

World’s End is the sequel to Dear Myself. It jumps around a little. It starts with Hirofumi when he wakes up in the hospital after his accident and he meets Daigo. It goes through him finding his family and him determining that he will be with Daigo. But he starts to fear that when his memories return, he won’t accept Daigo anymore so he writes himself a letter (which is the letter he reads in Dear Myself). Then we jump into the future to see after they graduated from high school and are living together. Again, there’s a few complications since Daigo is still fearful that Hirofumi doesn’t need him and may leave him. Yada yada.

World’s End also comes equipped with two short stories at the end, both of which are very amusing yet very weird. The first is actually a short story that takes place after another story she did (which I haven’t read, but it’s fairly easy to understand). It’s about two boys who are on their graduation trip in Hawaii (two of their classmates are from the Dear Myself continuum too, one being Hirofumi’s younger sister), which also happens to be their honeymoon since they were married. And have had no sexy time yet so they try and find some sexy time (No seriously, that’s the whole point).  The second involves a twenty-year-old guy who’s mother tells him she’s remarrying and he’s all happy for her. Until he finds out that his new dad is eighteen years old. Again. COMPLICATIONS.

Anyways. Read it if you already read Dear Myself so it’s not confusing. The short stories might scare you though. But they’re entertaining nonetheless.

Characters of Importance

Hirofumi: Protagonist.
Daigo: Protagonist’s loverboy. :3

Dear Myself Sunday, Nov 22 2009

Creator: Eiki Eiki
Chapters: 3 (3.5 if you count the short chapter at the end)
Volumes: 1
Genre: Drama, Romance, Psychological, Shounen-Ai
Protagonist: Hirofumi Mizui

Again, this is probably gonna be really short but mostly because Dear Myself is just a one-shot.

I first read Dear Myself a couple years ago when my friend bought it after we started high school and had entered our “rabid yaoi fangirl” phase (which has since cooled down but still lies underneath in the event were need to turn something really gay).  Dear Myself is the story of Hirofumi Mizui who has just regained his memory after waking up one morning. Two years ago, he had been in an accident and lost all his memory. During that time, he had developed a very close, intimate relationship with Daigo, a boy who had been staying at the same hospital. Daigo is not completely emotionally stable, especially after being abandoned before, and has become completely attached to Hirofumi. Unfortunately, Hirofumi, having regained the memory from most of his life before the accident, cannot remember anything that happened between the losing and regaining of his memory. This also means Daigo.

Dear Myself is the story of Hirofumi coming to terms with what happened during his amnesia and his relationship with Daigo. It is just a one-shot but it’s a very sweet story. So, unless you’re homophobic or something of the like and can’t take reading about a romantic relationship between two males, it’s a good read.

It also has a sequel called World’s End (not to be confused with the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie). Give that a read too.

Characters of Importance

Hirofumi: protagonist. Lost his memory and had recently regained it.
Daigo: Another boy that Hirofumi had developed a relationship with.

Star Trek Friday, Nov 20 2009

Still chugging along with Dragon Age: Origins. I’m still on my first playthrough but I’m totally making progress. Took a break yesterday to watch the fancy Star Trek movie with my dad.

Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Eric Bana
Director: J. J. Abrams
Written By: Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Gene Roddenberry (original franchise creator)
Year: 2009
Genre: Science-Fiction
Run Time: 127 min.

This is gonna be short. Because again. I’m lazy.

So, like, my dad bought the Star Trek DVD yesterday and we watched it together. My dad is a big fan of the original: he’s watched all the episodes, can recite most of the character backgrounds and knows almost everything about each race. So, I was wondering what exactly he would think of this remake of his beloved series. He had a lot to comment on that piece of crap they call a Dukes of Hazzard movie (seriously. Little of it was good. Except, Willie Nelson was in it and he’s cool). But, lo behold, this movie got my dear old man’s stamp of approval. He quite enjoyed it. And so did I.

The story follows the young crew of the Enterprise, in particular James Kirk and Spock. It opens with an attack on the USS Kelvin, which Kirk’s father and mother are on. The attacking ship is occupied by Romulans, who are after one Ambassador Spock that the crew of the Kelvin do not recognize. After their ship is continually attacked, Kirk’s father orders on evacuation (having been just named captain twelve minutes ago), including his wife who is currently in labor. As the captain has the Kelvin sent towards the Romulans ship, his wife gives birth to their son, James Kirk.

We also get to see a young Spock, who is openly being provoked by other young Vulcans due to his lineage has half Vulcan, half human.

After a series of events, the two (having gotten to a very rough start) end up working on the Enterprise together.

Obviously, I’m gonna be a sweetheart and not put in any spoilers. Because sometimes spoilers suck.

Characters of Importance

James Kirk: played by Chris Pine. Our protagonist. Kirk is young and brash but a true leader.
Spock: played by Zachary Quinto. Spock is half-Vulcan, half-human and the one who stands in Kirk’s way.
Leonard “Bones” McCoy: played by Karl Urban. Doctor on the Enterprise and friend of Kirk.
Nyota Uhula: played by Zoe Saldana. Member of the Enterprise crew. She’s romantically involved with Spock. (You go, Spock.)
Montgomery “Scotty” Scott: played by Simon Pegg. The Enterprise’s engineer. Scotty is badass. No questions.
Hikaru Sulu: played by John Cho. Enterprise’s helmsman.
Pavel Chekov: played by Anton Yelchin. Enterprise’s navigator.
Captain Nero: played by Eric Bana. A Romulan who holds a grudge against Spock from the future.
