I read Prince of Tennis twice over and it’s one of my favorite manga series. For real. I haven’t actually read it in months now but now is a good a time as any to make a random post of it. This probably isn’t going to be all too long because I don’t remember everything that happens, but I remember the important stuff well enough. Spoilers are scattered, here, there, everywhere.
Prince of Tennis follows the story of twelve-year-old Ryoma Echizen. He has recently returned from the USA to attend Seigaku, a junior high school in Japan that is known for it’s prowess in tennis. Ryoma’s goal is to make the regulars, the eight members of the tennis club who competes in all official tournaments for their junior tennis league. Also part of the regulars (and they every now and then switch about when one drops or slacks or whatever. There’s nine of them, including Ryoma, and only eight can make regular) is Kunimitsu Tezuka (captain) Shuichiro Oishi (vice-captain), Eiji Kikumaru, Syuusuke Fuji, Takeshi Momoshiro, Kaoru Kaidou, Sadaharu Inui and Takashi Kawamura. Ryoma, though he’s only a first-year, competes in the ranking matches and knocks Inui out of the regulars.
The first team of importance that the Seigaku regulars come across is Fudomine. These guys were considered the black horse. They were an unseeded team as well as from a public school, rather than a private one like the rest of the big teams. While Seigaku manages to beat Fudomine, they didn’t do so without insult and injury.
As Seigaku continue to work their way through the tournaments to their ultimate goal of Nationals, they encounter many other teams, as well as seeing Fudomine again. The important teams out of these are: St. Rudolph, Hyotei, Rokkaku, Yamabuki, Higa Chuu, Shitenhouji and, mostly importantly, Rikkai Dai. Rikkai Dai is the current champion at Nationals; their team is considered nearly unstoppable. Seigaku must somehow get past this team to win Nationals and become the champions.

Ryoma and Momoshiro
There is a lot of matches they go through and I’m too lazy to go look up all of them to give a synopsis on each and every one they do. Besides, that would take forever. And my attention span is too short for that.
Seigaku manages to work their way through the other teams; on more than on occasion, they barely scrape by. But, they make it to the finals in the Nationals. Lo behold, their opponent turns out to be none other than Rikkai Dai, the current champions. And, unlike the previous match they had against them, Rikkai Dai now has their captain, Seiichi Yukimura back. He was missing previously because he had to undergo surgery. With their fellow teams backing them up, Seigaku takes on Rikkai Dai. And in the final match up, Ryoma, the Prince of Tennis, must take on Yukimura, the Child of God.

Yukimura, captain of Rikkai Dai
Anyways, that’s as much as you need to know. Prince of Tennis is really one of my favorite manga series and I know it’s become quite popular over the years it was done. Even though it ended, Takeshi Konomi decided to grace us all with our favorite junior tennis stars with a sequel. Also, if you watched the anime series, it should be noted there are many differences between the anime and manga, so you might be surprised reading the manga even if you have seen the anime. (that was a long sentence…)
I’m sure there are some turn-offs to Prince of Tennis. The fact there isn’t any real action, such as actual fights, no magic, yada yada, will turn people off from it. That fact it’s about tennis might turn people off. And I’m sure it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But it’s still a series that people should give a go at. Sure, at times it’s cheesy, but it is entertaining. The main cast I find very interesting because each of them has their quirks and their specialties, but they are still your daily, average junior high boys. Instead of making them all some crazy people like most shounen manga do.
Characters of Importance
Ryoma Echizen: protagonist. Youngest member of the Seigaku regulars. Ryoma has the best attitude a twelve-year-old can have, I swear.
Kunimitsu Tezuka: captain of the Seigaku regulars. Tezuka’s known for being good a tennis, being a great captain and being a big ol’ stick in the mud.
Shuichiro Oishi: vice-captain of Seigaku and one half of the Golden Pair. He’s near his partner, Eiji’s, opposite. They call him the mother hen because he constantly worries for them.
Syuusuke Fuji: the prodigy of Seigaku. He’s always smiling with his eyes closed. He’s really talented but doesn’t take most of his matches seriously. He’s also somewhat of a sadist.
Eiji Kikumaru: the other half of the Golden Pair. Eiji is excellent at both doubles and singles and he’s the team’s volley/acrobats expert.
Takeshi Momoshiro: called Momo by most, he’s one of the team’s second-years and one of their power players. He’s originally just a singles player but he picks up on doubles.
Kaoru Kaidou: the other second-year. Like Momo, he’s originally a singles player but can now also play doubles. Nicknamed Viper for his snake-like qualities and playing style.
Sadaharu Inui: he’s the tallest member of the team and their data player. He can analyze a player’s style in seconds. Makes really weird drinks the team’s afraid of.
Takashi Kawamura: the team’s other power player. He’s normally quite meek and sweet, until he gets a racket in hand. Then he goes into BURNING mode.
Kippei Tachibana: captain of Fudomine and older brother of An. Was a top player in his hometown with Chitose Senri.
Hajime Mizuki: strategist and manager of St. Rudolph.
Yoshiro Akazawa: captain of St. Rudolph.
Kentarou Minami: captain of Yamabuki.
Kiyosumi Sengoku: Yamabuki’s star player.
Jin Akutsu: another of Yamabuki’s best players. He’s pretty violent.
Keigo Atobe: captain of Hyotei.
Kojirou Saeki: vice-captain of Rokkaku.
Kentarou Aoi: captain of Rokkaku. He’s only a first-year.
Chitose Senri: member of Shitenhouji and former partner of Tachibana.
Kuranosuke Shiraishi: captain of Shitenhouji.
Kintarou Tooyama: youngest member of Shitenhouji. He’s like a more energetic version of Ryoma.
Eishirou Kite: captain of Higa Chuu.
Seiichi Yukimura: captain of Rikkai Dai.
Genichirou Sanada: vice-captain of Rikkai Dai. Acted as captain while Yukimura was in the hospital.
Sakuno Ryuzaki: classmate of Ryoma who has a crush on him. She’s also the Seigaku coach’s granddaughter.
Sumire Ryuzaki: coach of the Seigaku regulars and Sakuno’s grandmother.
Najirou Echizen: Ryoma’s father.
